Course Outlines:

  • Introduction — the dangers of working aboard, and why accidents happen
  • Conventions, Code of Practice, laws, terminal safety policy, operations planning
  • Personal protective clothing and equipment
  • General requirements for safe access to vessels, and responsibilities relating to them.
  • Safe means of access to the vessel
  • Safe access to the work area
  • Safety of equipment used aboard ship
  • Safe access to above-deck container stacks
  • Safe working on above-deck stows
  • Safe access to and working in holds; the dangers of confined spaces
  • Emergencies and responses to them, examination of ship’s emergency systems
  • Finishing work, and leaving the vessel and quay.

Course Objectives:

This Unit is designed:

  • To stress the dangers encountered in working aboard container vessels at berth.
  • To explain the respective safety responsibilities of the parties involved in loading and discharging container vessels.
  • To describe the status of international safety standards relating to working aboard container vessels at berth, and how they are implemented in ports.
  • To describe the procedures that ensure safe access to vessels, safe movement about vessels and safe access to and working within cargo spaces.
  • To describe the procedures established to deal with emergencies involving personnel working aboard container vessels at berth.
