Often in assessing a company's businesspractices and legal compliance, the emphasis is on the company's financialrecords. It is equally important, however to assess HR policies and practices.Additionally, poor business practices can lead to very expensive legalsanctions. Just as regular companies ensure proper financial, legal andmanagement practices, HR audits can be valuable tools in assessing policies andpractices and ensuring that the company maintains a safe, competent andrespectful work environment. They are used to highlight areas of weakness inthe HR function, areas that can be improved and even areas where there are nopolicies or procedures.

The HR audit is broken into areas of evaluation that includewhat is needed before a company hires any employees all the way through theprocess of recruiting new employees, bringing them aboard, enrolling them inbenefits programmes, safeguarding their confidential information and managing, developing, retaining and supporting them. This workshop will take you throughthe various phases of an HR audit, starting from the "Data Collection" phaseall the way through to the often neglected "Action Planning" phase.

The process is similar to one that an HR consultant might usein conducting a standard HR audit. However, the structure and presentation ofthe process will allow you to perform the audit yourself. The approach adoptedbreaks the key areas commonly found in HR functions into categories similar tothose on which SHRM tests are based. Additional categories are further added tocontribute to a more rounded and comprehensive workshop.

Employment law is also an ever-changing field and, to avoid costly litigation, your policies, procedures and processes must reflect the law. In becoming a certified hr auditor, you can devise a strategy on how to remain legally compliant.[
