Diploma students who are successful in their application but who do not meet the English language requirement for their course, may be required to attend a Preparatory English Course before the commencement of the diploma course.
The Preparatory English Course aims to increase students’ command of English and equip them with essential communication skills that will enhance their learning of the Arts at tertiary level. The Course adopts a holistic approach that focuses on:
- Facilitating learning that is interactive, as well as learner and processcentered
- Equipping students with essential auraloral, vocabulary building, listening, reading, informationgathering and writing skills
- Instilling students’ confidence in listening, speaking and writing, both in and out of classroom settings
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students will learn how to:
- Heighten their awareness in listening critically
- Develop the ability to read critically and comprehend texts at literal and inferential levels
- Communicate effectively using a variety of techniques to actively engage in a discussion
- Develop, organise and express ideas in writing coherently and cohesively
There are two levels of Preparatory English course: Preparatory English Course for the Arts and Preparatory English Course (Supplementary). Students who do not meet the minimum English requirement will enrol in either course (or, both courses, where necessary) based on their level of proficiency as determined in the NAFA English Placement Test.
