The Integrated Diploma in Travel Tourism & Hospitality is a comprehensive diploma course. Starting off with the study, writing and research skills, the main emphasis of the course is to give students the best possible preparation for a successful career in tourism and hospitality management.
Learning Outcomes
- Develop a good foundation of travel and tourism skills and knowledge in order to progress to higher skills acquisition in the travel and tourism industry;
- Analyze strategic issues related to the travel and tourism industry;
- Gain an overview of the marketing and management principles and practices in the context of the tourism industry.
- On completion of the Integrated Diploma course, students will be awarded a Shelton Integrated Diploma in Travel, Tourism & Hospitality and can proceed to pursue their Shelton Advanced Diploma in Travel, Tourism & Hospitality programme.
Aims
The main emphasis of the course is to give students the best possible preparation for a successful career in tourism and hospitality management. Lectures on international case studies, group discussions and activities used throughout the course provide opportunities for inpiduals to apply their learning, to develop and enhance their business knowledge and competencies in tourism and hospitality industry.
At the end of this program, students will be able to:
- Develop a good foundation of travel and tourism skills and knowledge in order to progress to higher skills acquisition in the travel and tourism industry;
- Analyze strategic issues related to the travel and tourism industry;
- Gain an overview of the marketing and management principles and practices in the context of the tourism industry.
Module Synopses
Effective Study Skills
The module aims to provide students with the fundamental learning skills necessary to derive maximum benefit from their Higher Education studies.. As such, it will also increase the students’ independent learning abilities and good study habits.
Writing and Research Skills
This module will have two parts:
a.Writing Skills: to provide students with the fundamental skills of writing for their academic work. It will help students to formulate their ideas and thoughts into writing. Students will develop the ability to write creatively, format their work for different platforms and learn how to plan and structure their writing. The course will help students to connect ideas with writing and increase students’ ability to perform independently.
b.Research Skills: to provide students with the basic research skills needed for higher education study. These include how to find and select the most relevant information from source materials; understanding the concepts of qualitative and quantitative research; avoiding plagiarism and learning how to reference using the Harvard referencing style.
Communication Skills
This module aims to equip students with the communication skills necessary to gain maximum benefit from their higher education studies and to operate effectively as employees and managers in an organization.
Principles of Accounts
This module is designed to provide students with an introduction to accounting and in particular it aims:
- To introduce the basic principles of financial accounting and their application.
- To acquire knowledge and techniques that will assist students in the performance of financial accountancy functions in industry and commerce
- To enable students to interpret and report upon the information obtained from the use of Financial Statements.
Tourism Principles
This module aims:
- To introduce students to the basic principles and concepts of tourism as an academic discipline.
- To give students an appreciation of the history, dimensions, growth, impact and importance of tourism in the economic development of certain regions.
- To acquaint students with the various organisations and their role in developing and promoting tourism
- To develop an understanding of the various components of international and domestic travel
- To identify the current trends and issues related to tourism.
Quantitative Methods
To ensure that students have the basic numeracy skills to facilitate studying at the Higher Education level, particularly in areas such as business management and tourism.
Fundamentals of Travel Tourism & Hospitality
This module is designed to enhance the knowledge and concepts acquired at the foundation stage. It will involve greater analysis and evaluation of principles and concepts
resulting in a critical examination of the role of tourism within the global context.
Tourism Geography
This module is designed to develop the student's knowledge and understanding of the basic component of geography in relations to tourism. The learning objectives of this module include imparting knowledge on the importance of understanding geography to tourism, the map and its components, features of Asian and world geography and the various tourist destinations all over the world.
Planning for Travel Tourism & Hospitality
The aim of this unit is to increase student's awareness of the need to plan and manage tourism at all levels, within a national, regional and local framework. The intention is to show that with focused planning, the negative impacts of tourism can be kept to a minimum.
Financial Accounting
This module is designed to enable students to:
- Acquire an understanding of the theoretical framework of accounting and the principles underlying accounting statements
- Prepare and present financial statements for sole proprietorship, partnership business and companies
- Prepare books of accounts
- Evaluate the performance and financial position of organizations from their financial statements.
Business Management
This module is designed to provide the students with the knowledge of the functions of management, management theories, the organizational environment, concepts of leadership, motivation, human resources, and innovation.
Quantitative Techniques in Business
This module is designed to enable students:
- To achieve an overall understanding of how and why statistics and mathematics are used in economic and business decision.
- To demonstrate the ability to collect, present, analyze and interpret quantitative data using statistical techniques
Human Resource Management
This module provides an introduction to the concepts and practices of Human Resource Management. This module aims at providing an understanding of the personnel function of management through the consideration of systems and frameworks, which create and sustain the employment relationship within the organisation.
Fundamentals of Marketing
The aim of this module is to investigate the principles that underpin the marketing process and how these apply in business. It is a broad-based unit providing a general overview of marketing for all students and a foundation for further study in the specialist area of marketing.
Assessments
The 14 modules are assessed by a written examination or written examination and Assignment. Examinations are held for 3 hours duration for a maximum score of 100%. The examinations are held at the end of each module and re-sit examinations are conducted after the assessment and award board meetings which are held 3 times each year.
