Course details
This award will prepare you for many of the business roles available in the tourism industry. You will develop skills appropriate to both operational and supervisory levels. The programme will also develop entrepreneurial skills to facilitate new business start-ups and, in today’s economic climate, these skills will prove invaluable upon graduation. Students on this programme can expect to participate in a significant number of field trips which will support college-based learning activities.
Programme Modules
This award covers a number of essential modules including Introduction to Tourism, Learning to Learn, Guiding, Information Technology, Customer Management for the Tourism Industry, Irish History & Heritage, Language, Communications, Introduction to Marketing Principles, Visitor Information & the Tourism Product, Irish Culture as a Tourism Resource, Principles of Marketing, Introduction to Accounting, Tourism Studies, Travel Trade, World Tourism Destinations, Financial Accounting and Sustainable Tourism. Students also have a European language elective which they can choose over the two academic years
Career Opportunities
Upon completion of this programme you will be capable of undertaking a wide range of roles within the tourism industry. The programme will also provide a foundation for the development of entrepreneurial activities. The inclusion of modern European languages will also aid students’ mobility within the European Union.
Follow-on Studies:
Graduates may progress to the final year of the Bachelor of Business in Tourism Management.

Work Placement
At the end of year one, there is a ten week mandatory work placement in an approved Irish tourism business, organised by the LINKS office in conjunction with the student.
If students are considering an international career, the College would encourage students to study an international language during their two years of study and to complete their international placement in a location that supports the development of the language.
International Links
The college has extensive international links with hotels, tourism organisations, educational organisations and many hotel college associations such as Association of European Hotel & Tourism schools (AEHT) and the Council for Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (CHRIE). In addition, links with EU and American colleges also open up exciting possibilities for periods of exchange study and work.

About Galway-Mayo IT - Castlebar
The Mayo Campus is located next to Mayo General Hospital, less than ten minutes walk from Castlebar Town.
It opened its doors to students in 1994, in the west wing of the Hospital. The entire building has been sensitively restored to retain as much as possible of the original architecture, while providing the modern facilities and services required for students and staff.
The Mayo Campus specialises in nursing and outdoor education, as well as offering courses in business, technology, health sciences and more.
In 2011, it became the first Institute of Technology campus in Ireland to be awarded Green Campus status.
