Course details

The Certificate in Science in Quality for Industry - Statistics & Management is a 20 credit Special Purpose Award at Level 7 aimed at upskilling people who aspire to supervisory or management roles and/or who need an understanding of Six Sigma (at Yellow Belt Level). This Certificate, along with (a) the Certificate in Science in Quality for Industry and (b) the Certificate in Quality for Regulatory Affairs make up the add-on Bachelor of Science (Ordinary) Degree in Quality for Industry. Students who pass the assessments for the modules, or who gain exemption from a module(s) with this Certificate (under GMIT's Recognised Prior Learning process) will obtain the Certificate. The add-on Bachelor of Science (Ordinary) Degree in Quality for Industry is an add-on degree. You can undertake any/all individual module(s) and you can obtain any/all three Certificates. But to obtain the Bachelor of Science (Ordinary) Degree in Quality you must already hold a Higher Certificate (Level 6, 120 credits) in Business, Engineering or Science.

Learning Outcomes:

Production & Supervisory Management

  • Be capable of applying the principles of general and operational management

Six Sigma for Quality Management

  • Describe the role of Six Sigma as part of an organization's quality management system
  • Perform various analyses such as DMAIC and Structured Problem Solving.
  • Identify and apply relevant quality tools to manufacturing issues, such tools to include cycle time reduction, risk analysis, kaizen and waste elimination.
  • Apply probablitity and statistical rules and concepts.
  • Develop plans for continuous improvement

Project

  • Undertake literature reviews, develop a project plan, perform the necessary investigative work and write a dissertation on their findings.
  • Source scientific and/or regulatory literature and access relevant information through the use of journals, books, abstracts, current contents, inter-library loans, the Internet, CD-ROM and other electronic media
  • Design and undertake appropriate work and present results.
  • Identify the appropriate methods for research, to analyse experimental results and to modify the project as relevant.
  • Reflect on their project results and to be able to present their results, discuss the outcomes of the project and identify areas for improvement in their skills of project management.

Project

  • Learners will be in an environment where they can apply the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills developed in all other relevant modules
  • They will be required to design and carry out work, where appropriate, collate information and prepare a thesis of the work done.
  • A typed and bound document must be submitted for assessment. Each learner will also undertake an oral examination on their project.

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements to undertake this Certificate. But if having completed this and the other two Certificates in Quality you wish to obtain the add-on award, Bachelor of Science in Quality, you must hold a Higher Certificate in Business, Science or Engineering.
