Participants have the option to apply for one or both terms. There is a €20 discount for people who book and pay for both terms by October 6th.
Overview
The aim of the course is to assist participants to enhance their understanding of the problems and possibilities of development in developing countries. It is intended for anyone concerned with development issues for reasons of work, active support or personal interest. Prior experience or training in development work are not required. Each term runs for 8 weeks beginning in October on Monday nights in Kimmage. It runs for two terms, from early October to March each year. The sessions are held on Monday evenings at Kimmage Development Studies Centre from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm with a 10 minute mid-session break
Course Content
Term 1 Introduction to Developmentintroduces and explains alternative theories and approaches to development. Topics covered in Term 1 include:
- Theories of Development
- Representations and Images of Development
- The social economic and environmental indicators for measuring Development
- The role of international financial institutions
- Official and non-governmental Aid
- Trade, Investment and Development
- Conflict, Development & Security
Term 2 Contemporary Issues in Developmentcovers a range of hot button issues in development practice including:
- HIV/AIDS and Development
- Micro-Finance
- Food and Livelihood Security
- Community Development in Ireland
- Poverty and the Environment
- Climate Justice
- Refugees and Migration.
We provide this course to:
- Provide detailed information on international development topics.
- Introduce and explain alternative theories and approaches to development.
- Encourage a critical and analytical approach to development issues.
- Relate development issues to participants’ own work and life experience.
- Deepen interest in and commitment to Majority World issues.
Accreditation
This course does not carry academic credits but on completion all course participants are awarded an in-house certificate.
