    This course explores the process of designing for hotel interiors. With increasing growth in the hospitality sector in the Emirates and the Dubai 2020 Expo, there is now high demand from hotel operators to create innovative and culturally immersive hospitality concepts. Through a series of practical exercises, combined with lectures from guest speakers and industry professionals, you will gain an overview of all aspects of hotel design including designing for communal areas and understanding room typologies. You will understand how to create a concept based on local culture and influence and how to respond to a brief from a client. In particular you will gain access to the language of design narrative for the main international hotel operators. You will consider how to specify contract products in hotel design, including customising unique products. As well as gaining an overview of the supply chain and other areas such as sustainability, energy saving, budgets and deadlines. You will have the opportunity to explore design techniques applicable to a wide range of diverse commercial projects, with a particular focus on the guest room. This is a dynamic course where you will gain an invaluable insight into current industry practice, including how to become part of a creative hotel design team, as well as being introduced to the latest materials and trends. The off-site visit will take place at a luxury hotel, with a guided tour and conversation to discover how this hotel was conceived.

    Course Outcome

    By the end of the course you will understand the essentials on how to formulate a concept project, begin the design process and develop and present your design. You will have learnt how to plan a guest room and bathroom and will understand the design development process. You will have a clear overview of the hospitality industry stakeholders, from the main commercial operators to boutique hotels and other affiliations.

    Manuela Mannino is an Italian Architect and owner of THDP, a London and Turin Architecture and Interior Design practice specialising in hospitality design. THDP was established in 2004 with partner Nicholas Hickson. The studio has brought together some of Britain's and Italy's diverse design talents to serve the most prestigious International clients. THDP's first project was the interior design for the Olympic Hotel Project 'Pragelato Village Resort and Spa' in Italy. Clients include Hilton, IHG and private investors. Working in London from 2000, she gained contract experience on residential developments projects: 'Riverside Quarter' and 'Albion Riverside' and designed the interiors for the contract design company CP Hart. She brings her contemporary eclectic approach to projects, combined with her skills in design concept, to take care of the aesthetic link between architectural function and decorative details. Manuela is also a chartered member of RIBA.
