Course Overview
This course is particularly aimed at students who have completed the Introduction to Interior Design Level 1 course at DUCTAC. If one has not completed this course, they need to have some knowledge of scaled drawings and materials selection. Through the workshops, the students will further develop their skills, enthusiasm and flair for Interior Design by producing more detailed drawings and presentations. The lessons will be fun, practical and very hands on. The main aim of the course is that students become exposed to the world of commercial interior design with particular focus on hotel rooms, restaurants, offices and shops. The course also includes a visit to a Curtain/Upholstery showroom and factory in Dubai in order to learn the importance of the following: selecting materials with the correct technical specifications; using reputable manufacturers; factory inspections and quality control.
Topics Covered
Lesson 1
- Discussion on the project to be completed
- Review of the roles within a design company /Design Concept to Completion
- Activity: Propose concepts for a sample project
Lesson 2
- Suppliers: review of selected database/sample products
- Technical specifications of selected products
- Showroom/factory visit combined with design activity
Lesson 3
- Review of a set of professional drawings of a hotel room
- Discussion on specifications required for Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment (FF&E)
- Activity: Change FF&E of sample room
Lesson 4
- Review of a set of professional drawings of a restaurant
- Discussion on shop front, signage, branding, specifications, circulation and merchandising.
- Activity: Sample Shop design
Lesson 5
- Review of a set of professional drawings of an office
- Discussion on specifications for reception areas, boardrooms, work areas and break-out areas
- Activity: Change FF&E of sample office
Lesson 6
- Project Presentation/Feedback
- Written Test on all course topics
- Feedback on test
