Course details

To assist established supervisors and middle managers enhance their operating skills and strategies and to enable newly appointed or less experienced people to develop their existing skills and to identify additional skills and strategies of relevance to their role.

Learning objective:

Participants will explore both the theory and practice of skills and strategies relative to the challenges and demands they face in their everyday work life and will improve their hands on application of skills in the areas people management, organisation of resources, delegation, planning, communications and problem solving.

Programme content:

  • The role and responsibilities of the supervisor or middle manager.
  • The concept of undertaking and discharging responsibility.
  • Obtaining and retaining the support of people.
  • Organisation, delegation and time management.
  • Performance management, cost control, targets, goals and objectives.
  • Monitoring performance, implementing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Communication skills across the organisation structure.
  • Effective communication skills with senior management, colleagues and subordinates.
  • Understanding and applying the principles of motivation in a practical and effective manner.
  • Recognising and rewarding good performance.
  • Dealing with performance improvement issues.
  • Planning and preparing for communications with employees relative to disciplinary or grievance issues.
  • Dealing with difficult people.
  • Problem solving skills.

Learning process:

This programme focuses on the practicalities of how to do things and therefore involves the interaction of participants in case study review, role playing and group activity with a strong emphasis on learning by doing. Scenarios of relevance to the challenges and demands participants encounter in their daily working lives will be employed to reinforce the learning process.

People employed at supervisory and middle management level who achieve their goals and objectives through and with the cooperation of the people who report to them. The programme is suitable for established supervisors and middle managers who wish to enhance their skills or for people who have recently been appointed to positions of supervisory or management responsibility.

About First Polymer Training Skillnet

First Polymer Training (FPT) Skillnet operates as a training network for the  Plastics Industry in Ireland and is funded under the government’s Skillnets initiative. The aim of FPT Skillnet is to deliver training that is focused on the specific needs of the plastics industry and includes certification and development.

Initiated by Plastics Ireland, FPT Skillnet’s objective is to provide technical training to polymer processors, both at our centre in Athlone and in-company as required. Our administrative and course centre is now located at 7  Centre  Court, Blyry Business and Commercial Park, Athlone.

A full range of plastics processing equipment is available including Fanuc (100 tonne Electric), Krauss Maffei (100 tonne Hydraulic) and Demag (25 tonne Hydraulic) moulding machines.  They are delighted to announce Arburg UK have replaced the ARBURG ALLROUNDER 320C 500 170 50 tonne machine with a new ARBURG ALLROUNDER 420C 1000 290 100 tonne golden Edition machine. This machine is equipped with the latest SELOGICA Direct touch screen control.

Having a full range of  plastics processing equipment on site allows FPT to deliver  intensive hands on training.
