Course Requirements: Level 4 in Sports Massage Therapy or equivalent prior to the commencement of the ITEC level 5 (UK) diploma in Sports Massage The learner must hold or be studying for a First Aid qualification. This new exciting course covers the ITEC syllabus Units 420 and Unit 421.It has been designed for Therapists who are currently working in the Sport and Active leisure, including Osteopaths, Physiotherapists, Sports Therapists and Massage Therapists with the requisite understanding and complex skills and techniques to work as an advanced Sports Massage Practitioner. Advances practitioners will be equipped to work with clientele ranging from recreational sports and active leisure enthusiasts to professional sports persons and elite athletes.
The course is delivered with a practical focus. It aims to progress the Sports Therapist into addressing Complex Muscular-skeletal and Neurological dysfunctions. It emphasises posture and biomechanics as an important tool in the prevention and management of sports injuries. It utilises and addresses the works of many famous International Remedial therapists. It keeps best practice and safe practice as an important element in devising rehabilitation Programmes.
This is the IISSM 3 rd year to provide this course for students and we have 100% success rate. Many of the students are working with international athletes and / or semi pro or pro teams
Overview of syllabus
- All elements of Module 4 apply to this course
- Anatomy – Structural and Functional as per syllabus
- Muscular and Neurological systems as per syllabus
- Dermatomes and myotomes as per syllabus
- Neurological assessments – Deep tendon reflexes
- Injury management in phases of recovery / Ladders of rehabilitation
- Injury management and client assessment under SOAP
- Special Orthopaedic assessments for all the major joints and the Vertebral column ie: SLR, Empty can test, Lachmans test ( to name but a few)
- Advances orthopaedic Massage Assessments and Treatments Goniometer readings for all major joints and the vertebral column ROM
- LDM, Cupping , Scraping and Active isolated stretching for treatment and Management of Sports injuries
- Postural assessment. Anatomical position and related to the skill of their sport
- Gait assessment Biomechanical assessment / measurement of active / passive joint ROM
- Sports Nutrition
- Posture and biomechanics of gait cycles in relation to sports and abnormalities
- Rehabilitation techniques and fitness and functioning testing.
- Review all sports specific techniques introduced in level 4 and introduce Neuro Kinetic Therapy and Myofascial Release and evaluating when to incorporate into treatment programmes.
- Log book of industrial work
Examinations
- ITEC - Theory examinations with short and long answer papers
- ITEC - Treatment evidence covering Sport Specific Conditions(Case studies as per syllabus)
- ITEC - Event Log book of work completed in the class and in the industry as per ITEC syllabus
- Practical Therapy Examination and VIVA examination (20mins) on elements of Unit 421 as per syllabus.
- IISSM Continuous assessment

- IISSM Diploma in Sports Injury Management
- IISSM Diploma in Advanced Remedial Massage.
Opportunities for Progression
