    Course requirement: The learner must be 18 years of age before the exam date. Learners should hold a Level 3 (UK) Qualification in Sports Massage or Level 3 Body Massage or equivalent. APL will apply. This new exciting course covers the ITEC syllabus Units 418 and Unit 419. This Course has been designed for Therapists who are currently working in the Sport and Active leisure, Including Osteopaths, Physiotherapy, Sports Therapists and Massage therapists. This specialised qualification is to enrich practitioners’ understanding of advanced anatomical, physiological and pathological principals relevant to the application of Sports Massage. Therapists will learn to critically evaluate massage strategies and methods to inform on future treatment.

    Synopsis of Syllabus

    Anatomy and Physiology of Muscular and Skeletal system in detail

    • General Massage technique - hand and mechanical.
    • Surface anatomy and palpatory techniques.

    Sports Massage to include:

    • Remedial Massage,
    • Pre Competition,
    • Post Competition,
    • Inter- Competition, Massage
    • General training
    • Classification of Injuries and Management of injuries
    • Common Sports Injuries: Acute V Chronic
    • Techniques for prevention of injuries including Posture Assessment
    • Pathology and effects of specific diseases as per syllabus
    • Understand appropriate massage techniques for sports
    • Lymphatic Drainage Massage (LDM)
    • Muscle Energy Technique / Muscle Testing. MET
    • Connective Tissue massages Major ( CTM)
    • Soft tissue release and stripping technique (STR)
    • Neuromuscular technique (NMT)
    • Deep Tissue Massage (DTM)
    • Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)

    Understanding and application of:

    • Chryotherapy
    • Thermotherapy
    • Hydrotherapy
    • in sports treatments.

    Overview of bandaging and strapping for specific injuries.

    Sports nutrition / Hydration

    Exercise Physiology / Passive - active and resistive.

    • Ladders of rehabilitation
    • Effects of Exercise on muscles and soft tissue
    • Overview of Exercise Physiology
    • Principals of training
    • Energy Systems (Aerobic, Anaerobic, Creative Phosphate System

    Testing , Treatment and Rehabilitation of Injuries laid down by Module descriptor

    Case Studies as per syllabus

    First Aid = Order of Malta Examination. Or Occupational First Aid

    Examinations:

    • IISSM Continuous assessment Practical and Theory
    • ITEC Theory examinations combination of Multiple Choice Questions and written
    • examination of long and short questions. Unit 418 and Unit 419
    • ITEC Practical Examination one hour.
    • Evidence treatment (Case Studies) as per syllabus
    • Posture treatment analysis form x 5 (Treatments)
    • Assignment as per syllabus
    • Event Log Book. 50 hours of event treatments to be recorded
    • First- Aid (Extra cost involved).
