MSc Clinical Optometry West

Course details

The program fosters greater depth of understanding, advanced knowledge and analytical skills to diagnose and manage ophthalmic conditions. It features a balanced curriculum of basic biomedical and visual sciences, clinical sciences and techniques, clinical cases studies, and scholarly work through an original research project. In general, the part-time program is designed to be presented but the sequencing and duration can be adapted to meet the needs of each country.

The MSc in Clinical Optometry features six principal components:

Clinical Procedures & Techniques: Salus University faculty members travel to the foreign country and teach clinical diagnostic procedures during a week-long session. They teach in clinical settings that meet specific criteria articulated by Salus University and provided by the in-country partner.

Patient Care Sessions: The students travel to Salus University for two rotations of direct patient care training.  They perform ocular heath examinations under the direction of a team of clinical faculty.  The students complete all aspects of patient care evaluation while working with patients from The Eye Institute’s clinical pathology database. In-depth discussion of differential diagnoses, evaluation skills, and management follows the extensive exposure to patients.

Case Studies: The clinical case studies are coordinated and facilitated by Salus University faculty advisors who approve each topic and evaluate each student’s work. Students may develop case write-ups from their patient files. They must submit their written work for review by their advisors. They must also prepare a case presentation for delivery and defense before their advisors during a patient care session at Salus University.

Comprehensive Exams: Salus University faculty prepare comprehensive, written examinations that are administered to the students with on-site proctors in cooperation with the in-country partner.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Graduation and awarding of the Master of Science in Clinical Optometry are contingent upon satisfactory completion of all academic and financial requirements.

The student is responsible for understanding all requirements for graduation and completing them within the time dictated by the curriculum.

The student must successfully complete the entire curriculum with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.

The student must demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the faculty, the professional attributes and conduct necessary for the practice of optometry.

Upon Graduation you will be awarded the Master of Science in Clinical Optometry By Salus University, Pennsylvania Colege of Optometry.
