Whether you are a scientist, engineer, or even an artist, you need to have an understanding of business.

The Diploma in Business course is very much applied to the workplace and contains a varied and appropriate choice of modules to meet the diverse needs of potential students and their employers.

The course aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge to:

  • Apply effective use of relevant terminology, concepts and methods and recognise the strengths and limitations of the ideas used;
  • Apply their knowledge and critical understanding to current issues and problems in a wide range of appropriate contexts;
  • Recognise between facts and opinions, and evaluate qualitative and quantitative data in order to help build arguments and make informed judgements;
  • Appreciate the perspectives of a range of stakeholders in relation to the environment, individuals, society, the government and enterprises;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the major groups and organisations within and outside business and consider ways in which they are able to influence objectives, decisions and activities;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how the main types of business and commercial institutions are organised, financed and operated and how their relations with other organisations, consumers, employees, owners and society are regulated; and
  • Demonstrate skills of numeracy, literacy, enquiry, selection and employment of relevant sources of information, presentation and interpretation.

Course Content

Principles of Management

This module covers the principles and functions of management. Students are taught the key elements in planning and decision-making and the significance of different controls required in an organization.

Business Communicatio

This module is designed to give students a comprehensive view of communication, its scope and importance in business, and the role of communication in establishing a favourable outside the firm environment, as well as an effective internal communications program. The various types of business communication media are covered. This course also develops an awareness of the importance of succinct written expression to modern business communication.

Fundamentals of Financial Control

This module introduces the basic concepts and techniques of business accounting in recording and reporting financial performance (financial accounting) and its role in providing information to decision-makers (management accounting).

Fundamentals of Marketing

This module examines the role and value of marketing in today's increasingly competitive and dynamic environment. Students practice marketing principles in order to analyse, plan, implement and control policies to achieve marketing and corporate objectives in both profit and non-profit organisations.

Human Resource Management

This module provides a framework for developing the skills and knowledge needed for employment in the increasingly dynamic business environment. The module has been developed specifically for the international market, recognising the growing importance of employees working across geographic and cultural borders.

Interpersonal Business Skills

This module is designed to help students achieve the success they desire. Specifically, the course will help them enhance their job effectiveness, career development, and general well being.

Business Start-Up

This module seeks to provide an understanding of business planning techniques that transform ideas into viable commercial businesses. Students will conduct the market, organizational, operational, strategic and financial analyses that are required to produce a venture concept and an actionable business plan.

Customer Care

This module is to look at what customer service is and isn't and identify how you can understand and provide good customer service. Successful learners will have knowledge of the basic principles of customer service within the industry, which can contribute to the development of key skills in communication, working with others and in problem solving.

Effective Business Communication

This module is a general introduction to interpersonal communication skills for professionals, including the provision of the necessary communication skills to enable students to interpret business documents.

Economics in Business

This module covers fundamental economic theories, concepts and policies, which are applied in decision-making in a business environment. Students gain an understanding of the general economic environment and its effect upon business organisations and their markets.

Business Fundamentals of Financial Control

This module aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of good practice in financial and management accounting.

Business Marketing

This module is designed to provide a basic foundation for understanding the world of business marketing. It will give students the skills necessary to analyze the marketing and financial affairs of a business. The course will emphasize problem solving and critical thinking to relate key business concepts to the students' lives as citizens.

Organizational and Business Structure

This module introduces the objectives, roles, functions and various forms of business organisation as they adapt to a dynamic and changing environment.

Business Principles

This module is aimed at exposing the student to basic rudimentary fundamentals of business. There is no prerequisite, as it is entirely introductory. The student is made aware of what business is, its history and who the manager is. They then explore the ethics and responsibilities expected of business organizations, to different forms of business and strategies to making them successful.

Business Quantitative Methods

This module covers appropriate mathematical formulae and techniques to support the learning of business students. Students will also be taught to present and analyse business data.

e-Business

This module explores a wide range of applications for eCommerce and the use of these in solving business problems. Students learn about state-of-the-art technologies and their major impact on the business world.

Entry Requirements

  • Students must be minimum 17 years of age.
  • English proficiency at IELTS 4.5 level or equivalent or have taken intensive English for 3 months.
  • 3 GCE 'O' level credits or equivalent.
  • Preference will be given to students with working experience.
