Course details

This course is for adult learners who need English to:

  • function independently in survival and work situations;
  • clarify general meaning and communicate on the telephone on familiar topics;
  • understand and participate in practical and social conversations and in technical discussions in their own field;
  • handle most reading and writing tasks related to life roles; read and interpret most non-simplified materials; interpret routine charts, graphs and labels; fill out medical information forms and job applications;
  • understand work-related conversations and interact with the public;
  • meet work demands with confidence and follow written instructions in work manuals.

Course Outline

The course integrates the teaching of the key skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing in the following areas:

  1. Identify or use appropriate language for informational purposes, to influence or persuade.
  2. Select and analyse work-related information for a given purpose and communicate it to others orally.
  3. Demonstrate effective telephone techniques.
  4. Interpret advertisements, labels, charts and price tags in selecting goods and services.
  5. Interpret and use maps for travel needs.
  6. Interpret permit and license requirements.
  7. Interpret general work-related vocabulary, signs, charts, diagrams, forms and procedures.
  8. Interpret written workplace announcements and notices.
  9. Interpret visual representations such as symbols, blueprints, flowcharts and schematics.
  10. Interpret letters, articles and information about work-related topics and technical information.
  11. Interpret and write work-related notes, memos, letters and email.
  12. Take notes or write a summary of an outline.
  13. Take and interpret telephone messages, leave messages on answering machines and interpret recorded messages.
  14. Report progress on activities, status of assigned tasks, and problems and other situations affecting job completion
  15. Select and analyse work-related information for a given purpose and communicate it to others in writing.

Requirements

Trainee must pass the Pre-Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) to determine their workplace literacy & numeracy level

How will I be assessed?

All trainees for Workplace Literacy (WPL) are required to sit for a Pre-Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) assessment to evaluate their language proficiency levels before they are recommended to the different levels for class.

  • The CAT assessment is computer-based and consist of four components - Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.
  • After the completion of the training, all trainees are required to sit for a Post-Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) assessment to assess their improvements
