Course details

This specially crafted programme equips work permit holders in the service industry (hotels, food and beverage and retail) with English communication skills essential for better overall service quality and also prepares them for the Service Literacy Test (SLT) administered by the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA).

It consists of two tracks:

  • SLP 1 - for learners who have minimal basic knowledge in listening and speaking English and need to build their foundation for SLP 2.
  • SLP 2 - for learners who have knowledge of English and need to enhance their listening and speaking skills to sit for the Service Literacy Test.

What will I learn?

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to achieve the following SLT competencies:

  1. The proper use of appropriate sentences and words to state and seek information and to influence or persuade others in social or workplace environment
  2. Give or receive instructions, including commands and polite requests
  3. Use appropriate vocabulary to express basic personal needs, feelings
  4. Respond to simple questions about personal information or familiar topics
  5. Understand information about work-related topics
  6. Use effective telephone techniques to handle telephone calls and situations
  7. Read, understand and explain directional signage and the correct usage of maps
  8. Recognize the various modes of transportation in the community and understand important traffic information, transportation schedules and fares
  9. Understand general work-related vocabulary (e.g. experience, night shift), work-place policies and job manuals
  10. Understand work-related signs, charts, diagrams, symbols, forms and procedures
  11. Follow, explain and respond appropriately to instructions
  12. Understand job-related workplace announcements and notices
  13. Give updates on job-related activities, updating status of assigned tasks and other issues related to job completion and learn to communicate work-related information to others
  14. Report incidents and urgent situations
