The aim of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to promote and maintain safety and health in a work environment.

  • Identify and have an understanding of the role the legal system and legislation plays in health and safety,
  • Be able to identify the main requirements of the legislation and apply it to the workplace,
  • Recognise the factors that influence health, safety and welfare,
  • Apply principles and procedures of health and safety to the workplace when promoting safe working practices and procedures in their place of work,
  • Assist in the preparation, implementation and regular review of an organisations safety statement and safety management system,
  • Understand the importance of hazard identification, corresponding controls and risk assessment, likely to be present in the workplace,
  • To enable the learner to develop the academic and vocational language, literacy and numeracy skills related to Care Skills through the medium of the indicative content,
  • To enable the learner to take responsibility for his/her own learning.

Requirements:

The requirements for entry to the Safety and Health at Work and Play Level 5 Minor Award are, Junior/Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent qualifications or FETAC/QQI Level 4 Certificate and/or relevant life and work experiences.

The following content will be covered in this course:

  • Analyse the duties of employers and employees as specified in current Safety, Health and Welfare at work legislation
  • Examine the role of the Health and Safety Authority
  • Explore the role of communication and training in the promotion and provision of health and safety in the workplace
  • Comment on the elements and functions of the safety statement
  • Summarise the factors which contribute to safe and health yworking environments
  • Outline the principles and procedures of good housekeeping in the workplace
  • Explain the causes, prevention, emergency procedures, reporting and recording of accidents and dangerous occurrences
  • Analyse the causes and prevention of fire related events to include identification of emergency procedures, the fire triangle and fire equipment
  • Comment on specific hazards and risks when working with equipment to include mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Investigate how personal protective equipment (PPE) is used in the workplace
  • Explore appropriate procedures for use and disposal of hazardous materials and waste in the workplace to include reference to material safety data sheets (MSDS)
  • Examine the control and associated risks of a range of health and safety issues to include noise, sound, fumes, dust or any vocationally specific work issue
  • Explain the typical contents of a first aid kit and their appropriate use
  • Examine a range of issues related to infection control to include conditions for the growth and development of micro-organisms, routes of infection, symptoms, ill-health, preventative measures and emergency procedures for suspected contamination
  • Investigate risk factors in relation to safety to include hazards, work environments, work practices, effects of medication, drink and drugs
  • Interpret a range of safety signs in the workplace
  • Promote safe and healthy working practices in relation to oneself, others and the workplace
  • Outline risk factors in relation to health to include stress, lifestyle, diet, illness
  • Outline the role of diet and exercise in the promotion of good health

Assessment:

The assessment process includes a combination of module appropriate assessment procedures which will facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes of this course. These methods will include continuous assessment processes such as:

Assessment Format: Assignment 60% / Examination 40%

  • Assignment An assignment is usually carried out over an extended period of time and the assignment brief will require candidates to show:
  • An understanding and application of concepts.
  • A selection of relevant research techniques and sources of information.
  • An ability to analyse, evaluate, draw conclusions and make recommendations

Examination – A supervised exam will take place at a time to be confirmed by the tutor. This will be a supervised exam after the completion of the module. This which will assess the learners ability to recall, apply theory and show an understanding of the different concepts drawn from the module.

Progression:

On successful completion of this Safety and Health at Work course, the participant will have achieved one of eight modules which lead to a Major Award in Healthcare Support Level 5
