Course details

Our Radio & Sound Production PLC Course is designed for students who want to pursue a career in radio production, on-air presenting, and journalism. The course offers a unique introduction to sound production and recording in the Galway Community College's new digital recording studio. Students will gain invaluable work experience with Galway Bay FM and GK Media, whilst also producing a series of on-air programs for the college radio station.

Modules

  • Communications - (5N0690): This programme module aims to facilitate the learner to develop the academic, vocational & personal language, literacy and/or numeracy skills related to Communications. It will assist the learner in understanding the use of modern information and communications technology integrated with the role played by communications and relevant legislation in human interaction.
  • Event Production - (5N1374): This module is designed to broaden the learner's understanding of event management, contingency planning, budgeting, scheduling, evaluation, execution and event management documentation and specifically looks at quality assurance and evaluation in event management.
  • Media Analysis - (5N1298): Students will develop analytical skills and techniques for the interpretation of meaning in the Media
  • Music Industry Studies - (5N1458): Students cover a diverse range of industry topics from legal and technological developments to identifying and analysing key organisations and professionals. The course examines the recording process, contracts and finance and management skills.
  • Radio Programme Production - (5N1379): This programme module aims to to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to produce radio programmes and other radio broadcast materials to a standard suitable for a range of services at community, local, regional and national level.
  • Research Skills for Journalism - (5N2443): This programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills, techniques and competence to effectively carry out online and offline research, generate contacts and carry out interviews for both the print and broadcast media.
  • Sound Engineering and Production - (5N1900): The module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to work independently and under supervision in a sound engineering and production environment and develop an awareness of present audio technological developments.
  • Work Experience - (5N1356): This programme module aims to provide a Learner with the personal knowledge, skills and capacity to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time. It will also facilitate the learner to develop an understanding of the world of work and employment, Including the rights and responsibilities of both employer and employee.

Course Info

Work Experience takes places throughout the academic year in different areas of radio and sound production including in-house podcasting, local radio stations, recording studios etc.

Entry Requirements

FETAC Level 4, minimum of 17 years of age at time of registration, Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied, Equivalent qualifications from other countries, relevant life experiences, relevant work experiences and mature students.
