It is common that professionals (who are not trained project managers) are being asked to manage ‘day-to-day’ projects. In the absence of project management expertise, to manage in these situations we need proper project management thinking and a simplified approach.
What does ‘day-to-day’ mean?
These are ‘small and simple’ projects. Most will say that projects are not ‘simple’ and we agree that most projects have a degree of complexity, but not all. ‘Small’ is relative and a factor of organization and industry. For industrial projects, a million dollar project is small. On the other hand, for internal business projects a million dollar represent a huge project for most organizations.
‘Day-to-day’ projects are not projects that we can deliver in a day. They are projects that require a few weeks, or months. The key here is that they do not require extensive duration, funds, or resources. Examples of these projects are a marketing campaign for a small & medium organization; a learning program for a business unit; writing and publishing a book; or developing a new financial process.
