BASIC FIRE FIGHTING COURSE OUTLINECOURSE DESCRIPTION
The Basic Fire Fighting Course is aimed to give the candidates orientation on dealing with small fires which are in a stage such that they can be controlled.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course the candidates will be able to distinguish between the different classes of fire, the different extinguishers available and the method to use them. They shall also become aware of how to react in case of a fire emergency.
TOPICS COVERED
Section I: Introduction - The Theory of Fire
The course begins with an introduction to Fire and deals with the basic definitions associated with fire. It will also highlight the elements of the Fire Triangle.
Section II: FUELS
The different states in which Fuels exist solids, liquids and gases and how their state affects the fire are discussed in detail in this section.
Section III: OXYGEN / OXIDISERS
The second element of the fire triangle and different examples of oxidizing substances are discussed.
Section IV: HEAT
This section gives an overview of the different types of heat chemical heat, mechanical heat and electrical heat energy and helps the candidates to easily identify sources of ignition.
Section V: FIRE DEVELOPMENT
The five different stages of fire are discussed in this section and this helps to identify the stage until which a fire can be controlled using fire extinguishers and when to abandon efforts to extinguish a fire and evacuate.
Section VI: CLASSIFICATION OF FIRE
The different classes of fire are discussed in this section and the candidates are familiarized with the different labels used to identify the classes of fire for both the US and UK labeling systems.
Section VII: PRINCIPLES OF EXTINGUISHMENT
We then talk about the different principles that could be adopted to fight different classes of fire.
Section VIII: EXTINGUISHING AGENTS
This section gives an overview of the different types of substances that are employed to extinguish different classes of fire.
Section IX: FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
Starting with the anatomy and the different types of bodies in which extinguishers are available we go on to discuss the different types of extinguishers that are available in the market, their key features and methods of use.
Section X: USING A FIRE EXTINGUISHER
The PASS technique is demonstrated and the candidates are familiarized with the use of fire extinguishers.
Section XI: EXTINGUISHER MAINTENANCE
An overview of the monthly inspections and the periodic servicing of extinguishers are discussed in this section.
Section XII: FIRE SAFETY
A quick recap of lessons learnt during the course as well as steps to be taken in case of fire emergency, location of assembly points and reporting to seniors is discussed.
Section XIII: RESCUE DRAGS
This section covers an overview of the different Drags fire fighters may use to rescue victims of a fire, if they are able to do so without endangering their own lives. Single person drags, Two person drags and Three person drags are illustrated. Updated on 08 March, 2018
