The aim of this course is to allow those students who have completed an introduction course in computers or have previous experience to progress their knowledge to an intermediate certified stage.This module is ideal as a pre-ECDL programme.

FETAC Information Technology Skills is awarded by The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC). The purpose of this FETAC module is to provide learners with an understanding of practical experience in the use of the common generic applications. It provides an introduction to computer applications which will enable the learner to use the computer in a working environment and proceed to further modules in each of the applications.

Learner will be able to:

  • Explain a range of information technology concepts and terminology to include computers, computer hardware components, system and application software, input devices, output devices, data storage devices, bytes, files, folder/directory, drives, memory, LAN, WAN, and the internet
  • Describe the impact of information technology on personal / working or community life
  • Manage files, folders or directories using a range of common file management features to include create, rename, delete, copy, move, locate and save to range of drives
  • Use a data entry application to enter data using text, alpha, numeric and special characters to a minimum speed of 15 words per minute
  • Access a word processing package to open a file, enter and edit text by inserting and deleting characters, words, sentences and paragraphs
  • Format text using a range of format tools to include joining and splitting, line spacing, indentation, justifying and alignment
  • Enhance text using a range of enhancement tools to include bold, underline, italicize, font and font size
  • Edit a block of text using a range of editing tools to include move, copy and delete
  • Navigate specific internet sites through a browser with specific links identified
  • Use a range of functions in a webmail application to create, reply, cc, bcc, and add attachments to emails
  • Manage a personal email account to include inbox, read/unread, deleted items, trash, drafts, and contacts/address book
  • Produce an accurate hard copy of a 50-70 word document by proof reading, and using spell check, save, and print features
  • Produce a hard copy of specific information located on the Internet

About Ballyfermot Training Centre

The Ethos of Ballyfermot IT Centre is to allow the local community have equal access to the facilities and enable each member to progress from their existing skills level to higher levels. 

The centre recognises the importance of information technology in society as a means to communicate on an equal basis. The need for an accessible ICT training venue was identified as a priority area of action under Ballyfermot Partnership Company’s area action plan 1995 - 2000. 

Ballyfermot Partnership Economic working group hosted an Economic Forum meeting that took place 12th November 1998 that subsequently highlighted and identified education and ICT skills as a key inhibitor for economic development in the Ballyfermot area. Ballyfermot Information Technology Ltd. was a Ballyfermot Partnership initiative. The company, limited by guarantee was set up in 1999 in order to become the managing agent of the Information Technology Training Unit on Le Fanu Road in Ballyfermot. It became a Social Economy Enterprise on 11th November 2000.  

The Social Economy Enterprise changed to a Community Service Programme administered by Pobal on 1st January 2006. The company is now The Ballyfermot IT Centre Social Economy Limited.
