Course details

GMIT School of Business is offering a new postgraduate programme, Higher Diploma in Business (Level 8), to non-business graduates, from September 2010.

The overall aim of the programme is to provide a broad based business education, emphasising the disciplinary areas of Accounting/Finance, Economics, Management and Marketing, to honours graduates from the disciplines of Engineering, Science, Arts and Humanities.

It is a one-year programme for full-time students but the award may also be pursued under the ACCS or part-time mode.

Graduates of this new programme will gain knowledge, skills and competences that will complement their primary qualification, enabling them to both compete more successfully in the job market or establish their own business ventures. It will build on graduates’ prior qualifications and develop their business acumen.

Programme Modules

The programme will be delivered in two distinct parts:

  • Part 1—an intensive 2 week bridging programme, in which participants will be exposed to the disciplines of Accounting/Finance, Economics, Management and Marketing.  The aim of the bridging programme is to develop a good understanding of the fundamental business subjects in preparation for the Level 8 programme.
  • Part 2 will be delivered over two semesters:
  • Semester 1—Strategic Management 1, Entrepreneurship, People Management, Marketing and Financial Management plus one elective from Organisation Theory and Employment Law in Practice.
  • Semester 2—Strategic Management 2, Irish Economy, Marketing Practice, Business Communications and Negotiations, and Financial Management plus one elective from Supply Chain Management and Workplace Issues: HR/IR in Context. Some modules will be delivered to this group alone, whilst other modules will be shared with the current Bachelor of Business (Level 8).

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

This programme will encourage and facilitate the learner to construct knowledge through reflection, experience and interaction. The teaching and learning strategy aims to achieve a learning environment and an experience that encourages and facilitates students in discovering and constructing knowledge themselves. All modules will be assessed by, inter alia, written tests, assignments, practical exercises and tests, projects and presentations

Post-graduate Studies:

  • Graduates will qualify to apply for the Masters in Business in Strategy and Innovation Management (Level 9) in GMIT and other business related level 9 programmes.
