Course details
A Quantity Surveyor is an equal mix of an Accountant, a Solicitor and a Building Manager (i.e. the business person of the construction world). Surveyors are seen as having expertise in measurement, procurement and estimating. This programme covers all these specialised areas.
Programme Modules
Modules such as Construction Technology and Building Services help one appreciate how buildings are put together and subsequently operate. Specialisations consist of Quantity Surveying Practice & Procedures. Land Surveying, Computer Aided Design, Measurement and Estimating, and Procurement Studies. General modules cover broad but necessary disciplines such as Mathematics (Leaving Cert standard, for year 1 only) Practical Accountancy, Learning to Learn and Site Management.
Career Opportunities
Quantity Surveying offers a choice/ mix of office or site-based roles. Graduates find employment at a technical level with Professional Consultancy Practices, Building and Civil Engineering Contractors, a variety of Sub-Contracting specialists, Property Developers, Insurance Companies, Local Authorities, Government Departments, State/Semi-State Organisations, Utility Providers (i.e. ESB, Bord Gáis, Eircom etc) and Builders Suppliers.
Follow-on Studies:
A variety of options for progression are available for graduates to proceed, through an internal progression route, to year 3 of the BSc in Construction Economics and Quantity Surveying programme in GMIT or in institutes of technology or universities in Ireland and elsewhere.

About Galway-Mayo IT - Castlebar
The Mayo Campus is located next to Mayo General Hospital, less than ten minutes walk from Castlebar Town.
It opened its doors to students in 1994, in the west wing of the Hospital. The entire building has been sensitively restored to retain as much as possible of the original architecture, while providing the modern facilities and services required for students and staff.
The Mayo Campus specialises in nursing and outdoor education, as well as offering courses in business, technology, health sciences and more.
In 2011, it became the first Institute of Technology campus in Ireland to be awarded Green Campus status.
