The purpose of this module is to provide the learner with an understanding of the importance of maintaining a safe, healthy and hygienic environment for the person being cared for. The learner will also acquire the practical care skills that maintain the best quality of life for the person in care.

Requirements:

The requirements for entry to the Healthcare Support Level 5 Major Award are, FETAC/QQI Level 4 award or equivalent qualifications.

  • Communications 5N0690 – Listening and Speaking and non-verbal and visual communication
  • Care Support 5N0758 – Relating to the client and working with others
  • Work Experience 5N1356 – Planning and preparation and experience
  • Care Skills 5N2770 – Understanding client care and using equipment
  • Safety and Health at Work 5N1794 – Core legislation in the area of safety, health and welfare
  • Infection Prevention and Control 5N3734 – Health Management and National Standards
  • Intellectual Disability Studies 5N1652 – Context of intellectual disability and Models of service provision
  • Care of the Older Person 5N2706 – Ageing Process and working with older people and

Assessment:

The assessment process includes a combination of module appropriate assessment procedures which will facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes of this course. These methods will include continuous assessment processes such as:

Assignment – An assignment is usually carried out over an extended period of time and the assignment brief will require candidates to show:

  • An understanding and application of concepts.
  • A selection of relevant research techniques and sources of information.
  • An ability to analyse, evaluate, draw conclusions and make recommendations.

Skills Demonstration -A skills demonstration is used to assess a wide range of practical based learning outcomes including practical skills and knowledge. A skills demonstration will require the learner to complete a task or series of tasks that demonstrate a range of skills.

Examination – A supervised exam will take place at a time to be confirmed by the tutor. This will be a supervised exam after the completion of the module. This which will assess the learners ability to recall, apply theory and show an understanding of the different concepts drawn from the module.

Portfolio – A portfolio is usually carried out over an extended period of time. Portfolios may involve research, require investigation of a topic, issue or problem or may involve process such as a design task, a performance or practical activity or production of an artefact or event.

Learner Record – This course is assessed through completion of a number of activities and completion of a personal Learner Record which records your experience of supervision in a childcare context. This will cover planning of initiatives, making decisions, in addition to demonstrating your supervision and organisational skills. All work submitted must be your own work.

Progression:

On successful completion of this Healthcare Support Major Award Level 5, learners can progress on and complete a FETAC Level 6 Major Award.
