Course details
This course is designed to give the student the training required to service the sport & leisure industry, with particular emphasis on leisure management, nutrition and health related fitness. On Successful completion of Level 5 course, students are eligible to apply for The Certificate in Exercise & Health Fitness (Level 6 CEHF)
Modules
- Communications - (5N0690): This programme module aims to facilitate the learner to develop the academic, vocational & personal language, literacy and/or numeracy skills related to Communications. It will assist the learner in understanding the use of modern information and communications technology integrated with the role played by communications and relevant legislation in human interaction.
- Exercise and Fitness - (5N2668): Topics include anatomy and physiology, class instruction, healthy lifestyle and wellness, circuits, exercise to music, step aerobics, flexibility and body conditioning
- Leisure Facility Administration - (5N4666): Topics include the day to day running of a leisure centre, health and safety policies, marketing, customer care, code of ethics and special populations in the fitness industry
- Nutrition - (5N2006): Topics covered include components of a balanced diet and sports specific nutrition.
- Occupational First Aid - (5N1207): Basic First aid, CPR and AED training included.
- Sports and Recreation Studies - (5N2667): Topics include issues in sport such as history of sport, gender, equality, drugs, media, sponsorship. Practical element covers circuit training, resistance training and body conditioning classes
- Teamworking - (5N1367): Topics include learning how to plan and organize an outdoor pursuits activity to include orienteering, boot camps, hillwalking, kayaking.
- Work Experience - (5N1356): This programme module aims to provide a Learner with the personal knowledge, skills and capacity to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time. It will also facilitate the learner to develop an understanding of the world of work and employment, Including the rights and responsibilities of both employer and employee.

Work experience takes place throughout the academic year in a variety of centres and enterprises offering sport and recreation activities.
Special Features
This course provides the student with the opportunity to work with local gyms and leisure centres. Students will gain experience in the areas of fitness testing, programme development, class instruction, health and safety and the general day to day running of a gym or leisure centre. Links developed here may benefit the student in their vocational area.
Students also benefit from participation in a wide range of sporting activities during the year including soccer blitz, sports day, hill walking, sea kayaking and other outdoor recreation activities.
Entry Requirements
FETAC Level 4, minimum of 17 years of age at time of registration, Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied, Equivalent qualifications from other countries, relevant life experiences, relevant work experiences and mature students.
