Course details

The Certificate in English Language course in Portman consists of 4 levels (Beginner, Elementary,Intermediate and Advanced levels).

It aims to provide students with a strong foundation in the English Language and build up the interactive skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing in the language.

Students will be taught the necessary language and communication skills to communicate fluently, appropriately and effectively in English.

Award Criteria:

Attain minimum overall attendance of 90% (International Students) and attain minimum overall attendance of 75% (Local Students) for the entire course

Pass the Final Examination

Assessment Methods: Monthly tests and 1 Final Examination at the end of the course

Grading Descriptors: 50% as passing mark, with grades A to D

Minimum Entry Requirements:

• Age requirement:
• Minimum 5 years of age for Beginner Level
• Minimum 7 years of age for Elementary Level
• Minimum 9 years of age for Intermediate Level
• Minimum 11 years of age for Advanced Level
• Must sit for Portman English Placement Test

Progression Pathway:

• Beginner Level: Can choose to take up Elementary Level
• Elementary Level: Can choose to take up Intermediate Level
• Intermediate Level: Can choose to take up Advanced Level
• Advanced Level: Can choose to take up Preparatory Course for IELTS (General Track or Academic Track) or other courses within Portman Institute of Technology

Beginner Level

Reading

• Students will learn to decode and comprehend what they read
• Students will be taught word recognition, passage comprehension and construction of meaning.

Writing

• Students will learn how to combine letters to form words and how to combine words to form sentences.
• Students will learn how to use punctuations
• Students will learn how to express their ideas in writing and into simple texts.

Listening and Speaking

• Students will be able to speak for various purposes
• Students will be taught to understand both verbal and non-verbal cues and give appropriate verbal response

Elementary Level

Reading

• Students will be exposed to books and other forms of print and non-print sources
• Students will learn to decode and comprehend what they read
• Students will be taught word recognition, passage comprehension and construction of meaning.
• Students will become independent readers.

Writing

• Students will learn how to use appropriate punctuations and form appropriate sentence structures
• Students will learn how to express their ideas in writing and into cohesive texts.
• Students will be taught to write independently.

Listening and Speaking

• Students will be able to speak for various purposes, context and culture
• Students will be taught to understand both verbal and non-verbal cues and give appropriate verbal response, observing social convention and etiquette in oral communication.

Intermediate Level

Reading

• Students will develop a higher level of literacy
• Students will learn how to apply reading comprehension strategies
• Students will be taught to enjoy the creative use of language

Writing

• Students will learn how to write effectively for various purposes, contexts and culture.
• Students will be taught the processes of planning, drafting and editing.

Listening and Speaking

• Students will be able to speak for various purposes, contexts and culture.
• Students will develop accurate listening
• Students will learn to comprehend at the literal and interpretive level
• Students will be able to distinguish the differences between formal and informal speech

Advanced Level

Reading
