Course details

The programme is of four years duration (part time) and is comprised of three elements: coursework + a thesis proposal (two years) and a thesis (two years).

1. Coursework is completed as six modules – A common core of four modules and two modules in one of the following specialist strands:

• Ethical Education and Schooling (In Partnership with Educate Together)
• Research and Evaluation (Co-ordinated by staff from the Educational Research Centre)
• Special and Inclusive Education
• Teacher Education
• Learning, Teaching, Assessment and Curriculum

2. A thesis proposal module (at the end of year 2)

3. A 50,000 word thesis on a research topic in the specialist strand.

In the core modules, the programme provides a strong grounding in research methodology, “big ideas” influencing the educational landscape and policy analysis. A candidate who has successfully completed all coursework may exit the programme with the award of an MPhil on completion of an additional 10, 000 word research paper. Through a strong group dynamic, the programme fosters cohort solidarity and develops the inter/intra-personal skills critical for teamwork. The intention of the programme is to educate an emergent educational leadership to international standards with the skills and expertise necessary to function in a complex and rapidly changing educational context.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Applications are welcome from the full range of professionals working in education or a related field. Candidates should have a good honours Master’s degree or equivalent.
