Course details
The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to the basics of computing and the uses of some common software. This course is intended for those who have no prior knowledge of computers or have never used a computer before.
FETAC Computer Literacy is awarded by The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC). This Programme will help participants to understand the essential elements of computer hardware and software. It introduces common computer applications including Word, Internet and Email.
Learners will be able to:
- Outline how Information Technology affects everyday life to include social networking, e commerce, e-Government and e- Learning.
- Explain commonplace Information Technology concepts and terminology relating to computer types, computer hardware, application software, and the internet.
- Describe the health, safety and personal hygiene considerations of working with computers.
- Describe information security considerations including password protection, viruses, and provision of personal details.
- Outline the functions of the main hardware elements of a computer including input, output and storage devices.
- Operate computer hardware by performing all required steps including connecting all required devices, and powering up and shutting down equipment appropriately.
- Use a range a keyboard capabilities including text entry, numeric data entry, function keys, application keys, multifunction keys, symbols, cursor control, caps lock, and num lock.
- Use a computer application to create a file by performing all required steps including accessing the application, entering data using the keyboard and mouse, printing the file, and storing the file appropriately for subsequent retrieval.
- Apply relevant environmental impact reduction, health, safety and personal hygiene procedures when working in an ICT.

About Ballyfermot Training Centre
The Ethos of Ballyfermot IT Centre is to allow the local community have equal access to the facilities and enable each member to progress from their existing skills level to higher levels.
The centre recognises the importance of information technology in society as a means to communicate on an equal basis. The need for an accessible ICT training venue was identified as a priority area of action under Ballyfermot Partnership Company’s area action plan 1995 - 2000.
Ballyfermot Partnership Economic working group hosted an Economic Forum meeting that took place 12th November 1998 that subsequently highlighted and identified education and ICT skills as a key inhibitor for economic development in the Ballyfermot area. Ballyfermot Information Technology Ltd. was a Ballyfermot Partnership initiative. The company, limited by guarantee was set up in 1999 in order to become the managing agent of the Information Technology Training Unit on Le Fanu Road in Ballyfermot. It became a Social Economy Enterprise on 11th November 2000.
The Social Economy Enterprise changed to a Community Service Programme administered by Pobal on 1st January 2006. The company is now The Ballyfermot IT Centre Social Economy Limited.
