Course details
The 48-hour basic, but intensive communication course provides beginning learners of English with ample opportunities to explore letter-sound association of English alphabet, learn correct pronunciation, stress and intonation, increase their exposure to authentic written and oral English texts and conduct everyday conversations at ease. The course is also designed to help learners apply what they have learnt in the classroom in their day-to-day life and workplace as confident and fluent users of English. In addition, the course highlights the importance of nonverbal communication skills and equips learners with means to tackle barriers to meaningful communication.
Who should taket this course?
Non-native speakers of English with very limitted English, who are working and/or residing in Singapore will benefit from the course.
What will I learn?
- Pronounce English words much more accurately
- Display knowledge of English phonics, correct stress and intonation patterns in their output
- Construct grammatically correct sentences in both verbal and written output
- Use different aspects and tenses of English language to send the message across
- Recognize parts of speech in English language mainly nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions
- Minimize stammers and hesitations while conversing in English
- Demonstrate the use of active listening strategies such as getting eye contact with speakers, paying attention to speakers’ body language, asking questions to clarify certain points, etc
- Give their opinions and responses politely and respectfully
- Communicate clearly using Standard English in a Global environment
- Become aware of one’s own strengths and weaknesses as an English speaker of another language for further improvement
How will I be assessed?
Despite the fact that there is no formal examination for the course, elements of formative assessment and supportive feedback will be incorporated throughout the course through individual works, pair works, group works and class activities. Students' portfolios are to be kept for the assessment purpose. The decision if a learner is entitled to receive the completion of Communication Course Level 1 Certificate is made based on his/her portfolio.
Entry Requirements
It is not necessary, but it is good if applicants have basic knowledge of English.
