Course details

The Certificate in Proficiency in English provides students with a strong foundation in English that will enable them to advance their studies in Higher Education. In addition, the programme serves to prepare students for TOEFL/IELTS examinations.

Course Outline

• Pre-elementary: This module is available for students without any English background. It is meant for students who do not possess any English language skills whatsoever. The Introductory English module is meant to instill basic knowledge pertaining to the English language such as the alphabet, greeting words, numbers, months of the year and days of the week etc. It focuses on listening and reading with pronunciation skills as well. It seeks to serve as a bridge between using only the student’s mother tongue in academic environment to using English only. It supports students to overcome the difficulties of learning a second language. The module seeks to help students get a good grasp of English in order to be able to attend classes of Eng 102 Elementary English which are conducted by English speaking teachers. This module is based on the McGraw Hill Hemispheres series. This series of textbooks adopt a multi-media approach, including audio, video, and interactive whiteboard approaches.
• Elementary: This module will help students develop their grammar, reading, speaking and writings kills. This is for students who already have a basic knowledge of English. This module is for students who have some grasp of English, but who still have problems with basic grammar and little confidence in using English. Upon completion of the module, the student will have a fairly good grasp of the English language and be able to converse with confidence. They should also have the ability to read and write to a fair level of competence. The module will cover topics of grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening tasks and speaking, writing, functions and situations. This module is presently based on the McGraw Hill Hemispheres series. This series of textbooks adopt a multi-media approach, including audio, video, and interactive whiteboard approaches.
• Intermediate: Eng 200 Intermediate English serves to further enhance the language skills of the student’s knowledge in terms of speaking, vocabulary, writing, reading and listening. It focuses on common areas of spoken fluency, listening comprehension and writing. It seeks to enable effective study in an English only academic learning environment. It supports students to overcome the difficulties of studying in a second language. The module seeks to help students improve the overall communicability in English. The module is presently based on the McGraw Hill Hemispheres series. This series of textbooks adopt a multi-media approach, including audio, video, and interactive whiteboard approaches.
• Advanced: The module is designed for students who already possess the English language skills at the Eng 200 level. It is designed to further enhance the language skills of students who are planning to study at diploma level in English-only academic environment. Students at entry-point would already have good English skills but who still have problems with fluency, accuracy, limited vocabulary and a narrow grammar range. This module will help students develop their grammar, vocabulary, and reading, speaking and writing skills.
• Professional: Professional English will give students further skills in assignment writing which will be invaluable at the Diploma stage. It is specifically designed for those who want to enroll in the Informatics Diploma Level programs. This will also support students preparing for TOEFL/IELTS academic exams. This module is based on the McGraw Hill Hemisphere series. This series of textbooks adopt a multimedia approach, including audio, video and interactive whiteboard approaches.
