The modules delivered within this programme will prepare the student/production line operator to perform repairs and maintenance procedures making production facilities more efficient.

This programme addresses the current and future skills needs as follows:

  • Students will be given an understanding/appreciation of the systems and technology associated with a typical production environment.
  • The nature of the work is multi-disciplinary and the students will be introduced to all the major disciplines involved - mechanical electrical, electronic, pneumatic, along with the associated control technology.
  • With a high percentage of practitioners in the various skills spread over a number of specialist departments, Cork Institute of Technology is in a position to give hands-on demonstrations and practice in its well-equipped labs and workshops.
  • The modules have been specifically selected/designed to serve the needs identified by the sector.
  • As is typical of most modern courses there is an ongoing emphasis on soft skills, for example team-building, self-directed learning, communication skills, etc.

A consultation process with industry has been undertaken to ensure that the programme’s learning outcomes were compatible with the requirements of industry. Industry representatives were also contacted/updated during the course design process.

RELATIONSHIP TO EXISTING AWARDS

  • The modules used in this award are drawn from existing Level 6/7 programmes and can get recognition in follow-on programmes which the student may wish to pursue.

FIT OF PROGRAMME OUTCOMES WITH AWARD TYPE/LEVEL

  • This Special Purpose Award is narrowly defined, with a sharp focus on the technical aspects associated with maintenance and matches the material appropriate to the proposed qualification.

The award consists of the following modules:

Semester 1 (March 2015)

  • Electrical Power Systems (ELEC6005)
  • Mechatronics 1 (MECH6017)

Semester 2 (September 2015)

  • PLC Application (ELEC7012)
  • Mechatronics 2 (MECH6032)

Admission Requirements:

  • Leaving Certificate is desirable but not essential. Relevant work experience; skills gained through experiential learning and other qualifications, will be considered when assessing applications for the programme.
