Course details
This course is an intensive course with a series of lectures and practical sessions. It is very useful for those who are in the jewellery trade as it gives a good insight to the diamond market.
Course Content
- Introduction to diamonds and its history
- Why diamond is so valuable?
- Chemical and physical properties of diamonds
- Using gemological equipment to grade the 4Cs of diamonds
- Cut grading in detail, i.e. estimating the table percentage, crown angle, girdle thickness, quality of polish and symmetry.
- Examine natural diamond from synthetic moissanite, cubic zirconia and synthetic diamond.
- Examine treated diamonds like irradiated diamond, High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) diamond, laser drilled diamond and fracture-filled diamond.
- Learn about international disclosure rules.
- Reading an international diamond grading report, e.g. GIA, HRD, IGI & AGS.
- Rapaport pricing of diamond.
- Practical sessions on full diamond grading and identification.
Entry Requirements
An eye for details and interest in diamonds. No prior knowledge is required.
How will I benefit from taking this course?
On completion of this unit, participant will have the knowledge and skills to identify and grade diamonds. Participants will be able to grade the quality of a faceted diamond based on its 4Cs, i.e. clarity colour, cut and carat weight. Also, participants will learn about the different diamond imitations and how to identify and separate them from natural diamonds.

- Certificate in Diamond Grading (Issued by Far East Gem Institute)
- Statement of Attainment, Identify and Grade Diamonds (Issued by Workforce Development Agency)
*Participants must have completed the course with at least 75% attendance and have passed the required assessment.
