It is estimated that in Singapore, there will be more than 24, 000 cases by the year 2030, and this figure is still increasing with the aging population.
Dementia is common among elderly and is well recognised over the world to be a serious problem in healthcare. It can impact economy by the increase in healthcare cost as well as creating social and caring issues. Therefore there is a need to raise awareness in the society about dementia and how the elderly with dementia can be cared for at home.
When caregivers are well equipped with knowledge and skills in regulating and caring the elderly with dementia, hospitalisation rate is reduced, institutionalisation is delayed and the quality of life is maintained.

Family members and relatives of the dependent elderly in their households will benefit from the course.
What will I learn?
Module One - Understand dementia and different stages of dementia
After Module One, learners will be able to:
- display the understanding of what dementia is
- name common types of dementia
- recognize symptoms in different stages of dementia
Module Two - Communicate with the elderly suffering from dementia, taking into account of progressive and variable nature of dementia:
After Module Two, learners will be able to:
- communicate effectivley with the dementia patient, bearing in mind the sensitive nature of dementia
Module Three - Plan and provide appropriate activities to maintain self-esteem, skills and health of clients with dementia
After Module Three, learners will be able to:
- show understanding of clients' needs and capabilities
- design, tailor and balance activites
- work with family on the care
How will I be assessed?
Student attendance at all lesson sessions will be monitored and should be maintained to a minimum level of 75% attendance.
