Course details

This course is designed to provide the skills needed to pursue a career in the area of graphic design and provide candidates with a comprehensive portfolio suitable for entry into third level institutions.

Modules

  • Combined Materials - (5N0764): This Module is an exciting, hands on experience designed to develop a proficiency in a wide range of materials both natural and man made. Materials are integrated into other areas of study such as drawing, painting, 2D & 3D ideas.
  • Communications - (5N0690): This programme module aims to facilitate the learner to develop the academic, vocational & personal language, literacy and/or numeracy skills related to Communications. It will assist the learner in understanding the use of modern information and communications technology integrated with the role played by communications and relevant legislation in human interaction.
  • Computer Illustrated Graphics - (5N1929): The aim of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to produce a range of vector documents containing text and graphics. The learner will train on Industry standard graphic design software.
  • Design Skills - (5N0784): The learner will engage in a design process from briefing, through research and development, to presentation and execution. Research a design brief by collecting, selecting and collating primary and secondary source material. Generate a wide range of design solutions through visual and verbal brainstorming, lateral thinking and exploration of materials
  • Desktop Publishing - (5N0785): The aim of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to produce a range of documents containing text and graphic images from design briefing to printing, using a Desktop Publishing (DTP) system.
  • Drawing - (5N1862): The learner will experiment with a wide range of drawing techniques, including linear, tonal, gestural and perspective studies. Drawing in 2 and 3 dimensions, and in a wide range of media, to analyse, record and interpret a variety of subjects, including objects and life forms from the natural and manufactured environments.
  • Graphic Design Skills - (5N1978): This module is devised to facilitate the learner to develop the necessary technical & visual communication skills to acquire an understanding to the area of graphic design.
  • Work Experience - (5N1356): This programme module aims to provide a Learner with the personal knowledge, skills and capacity to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time. It will also facilitate the learner to develop an understanding of the world of work and employment, Including the rights and responsibilities of both employer and employee.

Work experience takes place one day per week throughout the academic year.

Entry Requirements

FETAC Level 4, minimum of 17 years of age at time of registration, Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied, Equivalent qualifications from other countries, relevant life experiences, relevant work experiences and mature students.
