• The aim of the Defensive Driving Training is to supplement and enhance the knowledge and skills gained whilst driving Light Vehicles. It is a pre-requisite for all employees who are currently required to drive vehicles on roads in the performance of their work duties.

• It is designed to continue the development of appropriate driving attitudes and behavior of any driver attending the course, and thereby to reduce the likelihood of that driver being involved in a blameworthy incident/crash. 

• From the outset, the ambition of the development team was to put together a course that combined the best available defensive driving techniques with modern driving practices. Also, it was felt important to address part of the course to effective "classroom" work; looking at both the theoretical side of defensive-driving and also examining some of the factors influencing driver behavior. 

• The intention of the theory element is to examine and modify, driver behavior and some of the unhelpful attitudes that may increase the likelihood of an incident/crash by interfering with the driver's ability to control a vehicle safely. The first objective of DDC was to establish an effective model of driver error, and so develop an understanding of the factors other than skill shortage, which were causing incidents/crashes. 

• DDC have adopted the UK National Driver Awareness Course model which incorporated the work of two psychologists, working independently, as offering the most comprehensive and effective models of driver error that could be integrated into the course.
