Whether you are a Project Manager or are going to take the PMP Exam soon, this course is ideal for you as it is a practical scenario-based course, assuming you are to manage a specific project and shows in detail what you should do to initiate it step by step.
You have been hired by "Queen University" to manage a strategy formulation project.
As per the Ministry of Higher Education, every university must formulate a strategic plan covering the next 3-5 years. This strategy should be fully aligned with the national higher education strategy, as well as the whole country's vision called "the 2020 vision".
The Project Initiation Phase is the first phase in the Project Management Life Cycle. You have to start a new project by defining its objectives, scope, purpose and deliverables to be produced.
In this practical course, based on a case study and scenarios, you will learn how to initiate a project properly to secure the needed authority for you, to start using the organizational resources for your project.
As a Project Manager, you should be able to answer the following questions in the initiation phase of the project:
- Why this project?
- Is it feasible?
- Who are possible partners in this project?
- What should the results be?
- What is the scope of the project and what is out of the scope?
When you start a project, you must define what needs to be accomplished and decide how the project is going to proceed. Each project begins with an idea, a vision, or a business opportunity--and that is the starting point that must be associated with the business objectives of your organization.
The project charter is that starting point. The charter lays the foundation of the project. It includes a statement of your business's needs. What is the history that has led to the need? How was it recognized, and why is it planned now?
The project charter should normally be developed by the project sponsor or a manager external to the project team. In practice, however, the project manager often plays a major role in the development of the project charter. The project manager works closely with the project sponsor, who provides background information for the project (e.g. purpose of the project and linkages to business needs, strategic priorities, objectives, and outcomes). The project manager also interviews stakeholders to gain more information in order to develop the charter.
The Project Initiation phase also involve creating the Stakeholder Register. According to the 5th edition of the PMBOK Guide (the PMI guide for PMP Certifications seekers), Stakeholder Register is a project document including the identification, assessment, and classification of project stakeholders, viz. those who are actively involved in the project or whose interests may be affected positively or negatively by execution of this project.
In this course, you will learn how to develop a project charter, as well as, how to do a stakeholders' analysis and come up with a stakeholder register.
The course contents are fully aligned with the PMBOK 5, and useful for Project Managers and PMP Certification seekers.
