This course is for adult learners who need English to:

  • handle basic survival needs for very routine social demands;
  • understand simple phrases containing familiar vocabulary, spoken slowly with frequent repetition;
  • interpret simple directions, schedules, signs, maps and menus;
  • fill out forms and write short, simple notes and messages based on familiar situations;
  • handle jobs and/or training that involve basic oral and written instructions and diagrams.

Course Outline

The course integrates the teaching of the key skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing in the following areas:

  1. clarify or request clarification;
  2. receive and respond to instruction;
  3. respond appropriately to common personal information questions;
  4. converse about daily and leisure activities and personal interests;
  5. identify or use appropriate language for informational purposes;
  6. select and analyze work-related information for a given purpose and communicate it to others orally;
  7. demonstrate effective telephone techniques;
  8. interpret advertisements, labels, charts and price tags in selecting goods and services;
  9. interpret information or directions to locate merchandise;
  10. identify or use different types of transportation in the community and interpret traffic information, transportation schedules and fares;
  11. interpret job-related technical information such as manuals and training classes;
  12. interpret written workplace announcements and notices;
  13. interpret and write work-related notes, memos, letters and email;
  14. interpret permit and license requirements;
  15. record information on forms, charts and checklists;

Requirements

Trainee must pass the Pre-Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) to determine their workplace literacy & numeracy level

How will I be assessed?

  • All trainees for Workplace Literacy (WPL) are required to sit for a Pre-Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) assessment to evaluate their language proficiency levels before they are recommended to the different levels for class.
  • The CAT assessment is computer-based and consist of four components - Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.
  • After the completion of the training, all trainees are required to sit for a Post-Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) assessment to assess their improvememts

Will I recieve a certificate of completion?
