Course details
This training provides fundamental skills of measuring a human body, flat pattern drafting and basic sewing for simple collarless tops and skirt. The participant will learn how to operate and thread the lockstitch and overlock sewing machine and sewing techniques for medium weight woven fabric. The drafting involved technical methods in pattern development of various kinds of skirts and tops.
This unit is delivered through white board drafting, quarter scale drafting, demonstrations and hands-on sewing operations.
OBJECTIVES
- Understand the relation of styles and ease allowance.
- Draft basic paper pattern.
- Understand markings and notches lay fabric for cutting.
- Sew seams, darts, facings, and seam edging.
- Attach zippers and sew button holes.
- Hand sew fasteners such as buttons and hook & bar.
- Sew complete skirts and blouses with set-in sleeves.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT
Possess at least 3 GCE “N” level credit including English and Mathematics or ES WSQ Workplace Literacy and Numeracy (WPLN) level 4 and above.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Participant will be awarded the WSQ Statement of Attainment (SOA) provided he/she meets the following requirements:
- 75% attendance rate
- Assessed to be competent in given competency standard
CERTIFICATE ISSUANCE
Upon succcessful completion of the course, trainee will be awarded the WSQ Statement of Attainment (SOA). WSQ Certification is nationally endorsed and recognised by industry partners

- Process of basic pattern block development.

- Basic lockstitch and overedge/overlock machine maintenance.
- Sewing of zippers, variety of seams and facings.
- Applications of interfacings and hemming finishes.
- Built-in fabric retention and shrinkage into stock production pattern.
