Visual Merchandising is the activity of maximising the impact of Retail Display space and has become an important element in retailing. Visual Merchandisers create displays using colour, lighting, space, product information, sensory inputs such as smell, touch, and sound as well as technologies such as digital displays and interactive installations. The objective of this highly practical programme is to ensure that attendees are furnished with the core concepts and skills used in visual merchandising.
This course will enable students to identify, select and pursue their career opportunities in the retail industry. The retail sector is a major employer and requires skilled staff in a range of jobs such as: Shop Floor Planning and Display, Window Display, Sales, Buying, Staff Management and Supervision.
Course Objectives
This practical course aims to give participants a solid understanding of the skills required to maximise the impact of any retail display space. The programme is intended for those working in the Retail Sector and for those considering a career in Visual Merchandising.
Course Content
- Fixtures and Fittings: how to suit them to the product; custom built or readymade
- Mannequins: suitability; how to dress them
- Use of Props: where to get props; how to use them
- Graphics: as a prop/visual aid; as information
- Lighting: its importance; best uses
- Merchandising: general tips; visual awareness; customer relations/communication
Assessment
- Field Trip - Visit to Big and Small Retail Stores
- Field Trip Assessment
- Personal Project and Class Presentation.
- Final Assessment and Certification
Certification
Successful participants will be awarded a Dublin Institute of Design Certificate at the end of the course.
