In the present ever changing and evolving world of today, diversity, equality and differentiation are commonly used terms. Therefore, in accordance with The Equality Status Act 2000, valuing and accommodating all citizens of the state, regardless of impairments is essential. This course aims to provide the student with an insight and indepth knowledge of visual impairment issues, which will help you to respond appropriately and confidently when dealing or working with people who are blind or who have significant sight loss.

Entry Requirements

• Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. There are no previous academic requirements.

Course Content Modules

• Reflection of present knowledge status
• Definitions of the different levels and degrees of visual impairment
• The incidence of sight loss
• The different ways to communicate and do’s and don’ts
• How best to approach situations, guidelines on leading a person with visual impairment
• Use of language and terminology
• Myths and fears surrounding sight loss
• Using assistive technology with a person with visual impairment
• Suggested adaptations to school / work / home environment

Assessment Criteria

• One short assignment will be required to successfully complete this course
