History of Art & Design 1

This subject area will introduce you to key historical styles and periods in European art and design from Neoclassicism (c.1790) up to early Modernism (c.1914). It will enable you to compare and contrast different historical periods and styles in art and design, and understand their evolution through time. This subject area will also develop the learner’s skills in visual analysis that will be required in other modules in the programme. Time will also be dedicated to academic referencing and essay research.

The Development of Interiors from Antiquity to Renaissance

Classical design and construction forms the basis of much of design must therefore be thoroughly understood. This subject area introduces the learner to Ancient Cultures and how they developed basic forms of construction, space planning, ornamentation and interiors functions furnishings. It also looks at how culture and religious development dictated change.

It will explore the history of spatial design in the built environment by looking at ancient civilisations and cultures through technology, the availability of materials and tools in the design of structures, interiors and furnishings. It will explore how design choices are shaped by cultural needs, size of structures, location in relation to topography sun & direction. How Furnishings evolved to provide comfort and serve utilitarian purpose & indicate status. Subject Area 2 will also develop the learner’s skills in visual analysis that will be required on other modules in the programme.
