Being versatile to implementing change when working in a software development team is important during the development process. Keeping your code up to date and connected with other members of your team is an important aspect of development. Revision/version control allows developers to make changes and review their code implementing changes that have been made, often by other team members. A number of different applications are currently available for the revision control process making these tools a helpful asset to any development team.
This programme is aimed at inpiduals who are interested in the software development and want to learn more about version control software with a focus on the open source SCM tool Git.
Programme Aims and Objectives
The aim of this programme is to provide the learner with a strong foundation in the area of source code management with git.
On completion of this programme the inpidual will have the skills to:
- Set up a Git repository for software development
- Create Git branches
- Manage Git branches
- Create and manage tags
- Explore Git repositories through the web
- Make changes to repositories
- Undo mistakes made by other developers
Programme Content
The programme is delivered through tutor led classes. Topics covered during this programme include:
- Structure of different revision control tools and how they differ from each other e.g. centralised, distributed
- Introduction to Git – Originally developed by Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, git has quickly become a leading version control tool in the open source and proprietary software world
- Hosting your own SCM server what options exist
- Outline of the common functions used by each tool during the daily software development lifecycle
- Managing branches and creating tags
- Remote access to servers to allow access to repositories by team members
- Web server setup and constraints
