This competency unit provides the participant with the fundamental and practical development on the operations of steam, compresses air, nitrogen, water and auxiliary systems on a hydrocarbon process plant. This competency unit covers the use of a range of utilities and services used on a day-to-day basis in a process plant.
COURSE TOPICS
TOPIC 1
OPERATE THE STEAM SYSTEM
- Hazards associated with steam systems
- Physical properties of steam and how they affect plant processes
- Functions of steam within plant processes (for heating, milling and stripping)
- Normal operating parameters and associated specifications with the steam system (low or high temperatures, pressures)
- Recommendations for venting/draining steam or water at high temperature and pressure
- Procedure to follow when there are problems with the steam system
- Steam utilization management system
- Communication channels with all utilities operators and personnel
- Procedure for reporting and recording any problems with the steam supply and systems
TOPIC 2
OPERATE THE COMPRESSED AIR SYSTEM
- Hazards associated with the compressed air system
- Functions of compressed air systems within specified plant processes such as agitation and instrument
- Normal operating parameters and associated specifications with the compressed air (low or high pressures)
- Recommendations for venting/draining the compressed air systems
- Procedure for handling problems with the compressed air systems
- Communication channels with utilities operators and personnel
- Procedures for reporting and recording problems with the compressed air systems
- Air utilization management system
- Importance of using clean, dry and oil free compressed air
- Safeguarding devices for compressed air systems
TOPIC 3
OPERATE THE NITROGEN SYSTEM
- Hazards associated with the nitrogen system
- Functions of the nitrogen systems within specified process (purging)
- Normal operating parameters and associated specifications with the nitrogen system (low or high pressures)
- Recommendations for venting/draining the nitrogen system
- Procedure for handling problems with the nitrogen systems
- Communication channels with utilities operators and personnel
- Procedures for reporting and recording any problems with the nitrogen systems
- Safeguarding devices of nitrogen systems
TOPIC 4
OPERATE THE WATER SYSTEMS
- Hazards associated with the water system
- Interpretation of water plant and equipment on a schematic drawing
- Functions of water systems within processes for cooling and dilution
- Normal operating parameters and associated specifications with the water systems such as PH, conductivity
- Reasons for different grades of water (potable, raw)
- Reasons for treating cooling water with chemicals and reagents
- Reasons for filtering and treating sea water before use
- Reasons for keeping potable water separated and free from all contaminates
- Procedures for handling abnormal problems with water systems
- Procedures for communicating with utilities operators
- Water utilization management system
- Safeguarding devices for water systems
- Specify the reporting and recording of any problems with the water supply and systems
TOPIC 5
OPERATE THE AUXILIARY SERVICES
- Hazards in association with auxiliary plant and equipment
- Interpretation of auxiliary plant and equipment on schematic drawing
- Functions of auxiliary plant and equipment within specified processes
- Normal operating parameters and associated specifications of auxiliary plant and equipment
- Application of vacuum (pumps, lutes, barometric leg, separators)
- Application of oxygen and CO2 (storage, pipe-work, valves)
- Application n of fuel oil and gas (storage, pipe-work, regulators and burners)
- Procedures for handling abnormal problems with auxiliary plant and equipment.
- Procedures for communicating with utilities operators
- Procedure for reporting and recording system problems with auxiliary plant and equipment
- Safeguarding systems of auxiliary services
PRE-REQUISITES
Candidates must be able to:
- Understand and speak English
- Demonstrate maths proficiency
- Successfully complete an assessment test conducted by CPTC

- Process technicians or operators looking for skills enhancement
- Personnel interested in joining the chemical and process industry
CERTIFICATION
A WSQ Statement of Attainment will be issued to each participant upon successful completion of the course of the course
