Course details
Access to the built and external environment affects a large number of people within society. It is accepted throughout the European Union that at any one time 15-20% of the population will have a significant level of disability of a temporary or permanent nature.
Access audits are inspections of buildings or external environments aimed at assessing their accessibility against relevant standards and best practice guidelines, such as National Disability Authority (NDA) Guidelines, “Building for Everyone” and BS8300:2009.
Course is designed for personnel who wish to gain an understanding of accessibility issues and access auditing and develop the skills necessary to become an access auditor.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this training course, delegates should be able to:
- Gain increased disability awareness and understanding of accessibility issues and principles of inclusive design
- Be familiar with applicable best practice guidelines and relevant standards
- Understand the role of an access auditor
- Be competent to conduct an access audit and produce an audit report
- Understand scope and methodology of a design appraisal
- Develop practical design appraisal skills

Day 1
- Introduction to the accessibility issues – definitions, statistics, terminology used, etc
- The Social Vs Medical models of disability
- Illustrations of Good vs Bad practice
- Outline of Irish and International context: legislation, guidelines & best practice, current practice in public & commercial buildings
- Equal Status Acts - employment & equality
- Access guides and Accessibility Awards
- Commercial reasons for good accessibility – the Business Case
- Introduction to design guidance
Day 2
- Design appraisal exercise
- Scope of typical design appraisal - examples, client queries, examples of design appraisals
- Access auditing methodology - basic principles
- Audit journey, Equipment, Examples
- Access Audit Practical Exercise
Day 3
- Audit exercise group presentations
- Audit Report and Access Statements
- Emergency egress
- Streetscapes - examples of good v bad practice
After attending the 3-day course delegates will be required to carry out an access audit of a suitable facility or building and submit the report for assessment by the course tutor(s).
