Course details
Day 1
- The thermoforming forming process, including clamping, heating, sheet level control, pre-stretch, thermoforming, plug assist, cooling and release.
- Thermoforming mould tool and design, inc: Male and Female moulds, Base boards and mounting, Mould making materials, Draught angles and tapers, Venting, Shrinkage and mould release, Ejection techniques, Under-cuts, Splits, multi-Impression and plug assist design, Mould Cooling Techniques.
- Practical Session
Day 2
- Product Design, including: Components and applications, wall sections and profiles, webbing and thinning, chill marking, definition, reinforcing, finishing and trimming.
- Trouble shooting, including: Blistering, scorching, sticking, poor definition, webbing, warping, chill marking, thinning, tearing, sagging, contamination and static.
- Thermoforming materials, including: Material Characteristics, ABS, PMMA, PETG, HIPS, PC, PP, PE and PVC are covered.
- Multi-layer materials and feed stocks, inline processes.

The centre is also equipped with a Formech 300XQ thermoforming machine, which will be used for the practical element of the course
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The course introduces the subject of thermoforming technology. The course will be useful to existing or new vacuum forming machine setter operators, plastic product designers, vacuum form tool manufacturers, designer makers, product engineers (eg, medical production / product development) and those undertaking new plastic product development and prototytpe manufacture.

About First Polymer Training Skillnet
First Polymer Training (FPT) Skillnet operates as a training network for the Plastics Industry in Ireland and is funded under the government’s Skillnets initiative. The aim of FPT Skillnet is to deliver training that is focused on the specific needs of the plastics industry and includes certification and development.
Initiated by Plastics Ireland, FPT Skillnet’s objective is to provide technical training to polymer processors, both at our centre in Athlone and in-company as required. Our administrative and course centre is now located at 7 Centre Court, Blyry Business and Commercial Park, Athlone.
A full range of plastics processing equipment is available including Fanuc (100 tonne Electric), Krauss Maffei (100 tonne Hydraulic) and Demag (25 tonne Hydraulic) moulding machines. They are delighted to announce Arburg UK have replaced the ARBURG ALLROUNDER 320C 500 170 50 tonne machine with a new ARBURG ALLROUNDER 420C 1000 290 100 tonne golden Edition machine. This machine is equipped with the latest SELOGICA Direct touch screen control.
Having a full range of plastics processing equipment on site allows FPT to deliver intensive hands on training.
