Course details

This course delivered by experienced nursing & allied health professionals from specialist palliative care aims to provide health care assistants with a greater understanding of the palliative approach. The programme provides the opportunity for individuals to share their experiences, ideas and reflect on their provision of end of life care for patients in their care. The programme has an underlying theme of “bedside care needs” of the patient and family - the Health Care Assistant role in alleviation of patients physical symptoms e.g. pain, nausea & vomiting, breathlessness and address’s common communication issues, dealing with the challenging questions such as ...“Am I dying?” “Don’t tell mum she has cancer.”

This program is an excellent stepping stone for those who wish to pursue the FETAC/QQI Level 5 Healthcare Support award and compliments the learning for those who have already completed that level 5 FETAC/QQI award.

On completing this study day care assistants will be able to:

  • Identify the Healthcare Assistant contribution in relation to Standard 16 “ End of Life Care” National Quality Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland
  • Identify the individuals who is nearing the last few hours of life
  • Outline common symptoms in end of life
  • Understand the concept of “total pain”
  • Recognise palliative care emergencies
  • Identify the psychosocial issues in palliative care
  • Appreciate the importance of good communication
  • Recognise the importance of personal coping
  • Identify the palliative care core competencies required for health care assistants when providing a palliative approach as set out by the Palliative Care Competence Framework HSE 2014.
