Course details

This course equips learners with the fundamental knowledge and skills on technical writing that includes writing in multiple different formats, and writing for different audiences. It provides learners with the opportunity to apply, demonstrate and practice the knowledge and skills learnt on writing technical documents through classroom and practical sessions.

Course Outline

  • Preparing for a Technical Presentation: Understanding audience; Overall event preparation; Viewing representative presentations.
  • Structure of a Technical Presentation: How technical presentations differ from other types of presentations; Scripting and organizing of content, rhetorical strategies, argumentation, language use and misuse, emphasis strategies, questioning.
  • Analysis of case-study presentations
  • Preparing Visuals – Dos and Don’ts: What considerations are required? Posters, PowerPointers and presentation skills; Principles of visual communication, ethical presentation of data, audio, old-school presentations with flip charts and black/white boards; use of ancillary props.
  • Delivery of Technical Presentations: Voice; eye-contact; volume; intonation; stress; pacing; enunciation; gestures; energy projection; dealing with the unexpected.
  • Stand and deliver! Pressure flash presentations and anonymous peer critique ballots.
  • Wrap-up and review of core concepts, bibliography, resources

Requirements

Learners are a assumed to:

  • Have in depth knowledge of their technical area
  • Be able to listen, read, speak and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to Employability Skills System (ESS) level 8
  • Be able apply effective problem-solving and decision-making skills at a proficiency level equivalent to the Problem Solving and Decision Making Skills (ESS) at Supervisory level
  • Be able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to Employability Skills System (ESS) level 8
