This course was designed by Margaret Daly, accredited by QQI and migrated to the Common Awards. You have the option therefore of a programme leading to a QQI award - further education and training, called Supervisory Skills 6N2014
Who the Programme is for
- Those responsible for the work of others and wishing to validate their experience with the latest national qualification in staff supervision
- Persons wishing to pursue staff supervision and line management as a career
- Unemployed persons wishing to return to employment or education by upskilling to the national qualification for staff supervision
Note: Some previous experience of supervising the work of others is desirable, or participants are encouraged to organise access to supervise the work of others. Tthe equivalent of written English of Leaving Certificate standard is recommended.
Programme Aim
The purpose of the programme is to ensure that learners have the required skills, knowledge and competence to work effectively as first-line supervisors/managers using standards of best-practice in a range of sectors: public, private and voluntary
- To create and enhance the skills of people wishing to pursue staff supervision and line management as a career
- To strenghten and expand the capabilities of team leaders so as to be able to operate effectively and professionally as first-line managers/supervisors, developing a consistent approach to motivating, engaging and supervising others, through practice sessions and feedback
- To create and enhance the employabilty skills of people wishing to return to education and/or employment by providing the skills and knowledge to supervise the work of others to contribute to organisation goals
Content
Underpinning Knowledge
- Principles and practice of Supervision/line management
- Models of supervisory management for different contexts; Barriers/challenges in staff supervision; Attributes and skills; Role re standards and quality
Build a winning team - Demonstrate practical skills for the workplace
- Team training Needs Analysis, aligned to organisational goals
- Team Supervision skill practice including team briefing, negotiation of work plan, delegation, monitoring of team and individual, feedback to recognise achievement and to re-direct performance/resolving issues, evaluation of individual and team progress
Project Management & Operational Planning – Demonstrate practical skills
- Plan, organise, monitor and review results for a workplace project
Organisation Skills - Demonstrate practical skills for the workplace
- Planning, organising, meeting facilitation, time management, follow up actions, reflection on personal practice
Assessment
Assessment is on a continuous basis. Learners are required to prepare assignments and deliver a skill demonstration, using own notes and the guidelines provided. There is no exam.
