Course details

Superannuation for the Education Sector is ideally directed towards individuals who have at least some familiarity with Superannuation and will place the system in context for those who have worked in the area for six months or more.

Objectives

On completion of the course, participants should:

  • be able to calculate the full range of entitlements
  • have acquired a framework of good superannuation practice for use in their own workplace.

Content

Module 1 will provide participants with:

  • a consideration of the legal basis for the schemes in operation
  • the principles of good practice in superannuation administration
  • an appreciation of the basic formulae for the calculation of benefits
  • a knowledge of the law and practice governing such issues as: pensionable service and added years, transfer of service, pensionable remuneration and service of (a) non-teaching officers and (b) VEC/IOT teachers.
  • Contributions to pension scheme
  • Purchase of service including retirement ages
  • Case study exercise briefing.

Module 2 will provide participants with:

  • Widows and Orphans’ and Spouses’ & Childrens’ Schemes
  • information on the law and practice governing contributions (payments and repayments), death grants, short service and marriage gratuities and preserved benefits;
  • an understanding of how the Pensions Act and the Family Law Acts impact upon the administration of superannuation at both central and local level;
  • early retirement for teachers
  • practical review and evaluation of the case study exercises.

Course Methodology

Due to the nature of the subject and the need for practical application of course learnings in the workplace, a high level of participation will enhance the degree of benefit gained from attending. Discussion and problem solving will be combined with short presentations, exercises and question and answer sessions. Participants will be required to complete a complex case study between modules to enable them to apply the knowledge and concepts covered on Module One.
