Course details

This course is ideally directed towards individuals who have at least some familiarity with Superannuation and will place the system in context for those who have worked in the area for six months or more.

Due to the nature of the subject and the need for practical application of course learning in the workplace, this course is intended to be highly interactive. On-going participation will enhance the degree of benefit gained from attending. Discussion and problem solving will be combined with short presentations, exercises and question and answer sessions. Participants will be required to complete a complex case study between modules.

Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will:

  • be able to calculate the full range of entitlements
  • have acquired a framework of good superannuation practice for use in their own workplace;

Content

The course will cover the following areas:

Module 1:

  • A consideration of the legal basis for the schemes in operation
  • The principles of good practice in superannuation administration
  • An appreciation of the basic formulae for the calculation of benefits
  • A knowledge of the law and practice governing such issues as: pensionable service and added years; pensionable remuneration and reckonable service; and pension benefits
  • Case study exercise briefing.

Module 2:

  • Widows’ and Orphans’/Spouses’ & Childrens’ Schemes
  • Information on the law and practice governing contributions (payments and repayments)
  • Death grants, short service and marriage gratuities and preserved benefits
  • An understanding of how the 1990 Pensions Act and the Family Law Acts impact upon the administration of superannuation at both central and local level
  • Practical review and evaluation of the case study exercises.
